As somebody who’s never quite known how to introduce myself (“do you go by Jonathan or Jon?” is always the first question I get asked) I feel your pain! And I think you reveal one of the key components of this whole naming issue: To name something is to have power over it, and we think that by naming ourselves, we somehow acquire more power over ourselves, and how others perceive, treat, and interact with us.
