I think there’s a mentality around writing that seems common in most “creative” outlets, that it’s not real work and so therefore people who want or expect to be compensated for it are greedy, or misguided. Look at the whole Spotify/streaming music discourse right now. So many people assume that all musicians are multimillionaires and that to ask to be compensated beyond the 0.0001% royalties they get from most of the streaming services is the height of crass capitalism.
One of the things that initially drew me to Medium was the social and support aspect of it. Sad to see that it’s turning into just another marketplace where everybody shouts over everybody else, trying to get eyeballs on THEIR work to the exclusion of all others!
